Moon-related conspiracy theories don’t start and end with the “faked” Apollo 11 mission of 1969 - there’s a whole galaxy of ‘em... and they are absolutely mental.
As someone obsessed with horoscopes (including those of people who aren’t real), the idea that the Moon DOES NOT EXIST absolutely terrifies me. How will I live my life without it? Or more pressingly, what the fuck has been navigating me through existence since 1983?!
While I cannot physically prove the existence of the Moon, I choose to believe it is there. I’ve seen it, I’ve done all sorts of ridiculous “spells” using its pearlescent rays, and whenever I see it hovering in the sky I feel instantly soothed. But there is a group of people out there who are full blown “Moon Deniers” - they think it is isn’t real and we are all being tricked.
I’m not 100% sure what can be gained from tricking people about the Moon’s existence. There was only one way to get answers to this new troubling question - look on Reddit.
Here I found one explanation which seems as good as any: “To begin, there is no evidence that the moon exists.
“The only evidence that does exists comes from the twelve men who have supposedly walked across the moon — Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, Alan Bean, Eugene Cernan, Pete Conrad, Charles Duke, James Irwin, Edgar Mitchell, Harrison Schmitt, David Scott, Alan Shepard and John Young — all of whom were American and worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) space program.
“To accept the witness testimony of these presumed astronauts is to accept the fairytale narrative that has been proposed by the United States government, and these testimonies should be taken with a grain of salt, especially considering that the space program was a hoax, including the moon landing.”
It’s a valid point - but if people are going to start denying the existence of something they’ve not physically interacted with, I would need to start denying not only the Moon, but things like great white sharks, my grandads, and rubies.
I’m still sure the Moon is real, but his rant reminded me of another ‘fun fact’ I learnt from the Internet recently... “NASA” is Hebrew for ‘deceive’.
